Crossword answers become easier when you identify what kind of clue you are reading, preserve its grammar, and use every crossing letter as evidence.

Use four signals together.
- Answer length: Count the squares before considering possible words.
- Known letters: Keep every confirmed crossing letter in its exact position.
- Clue grammar: Match singular with singular, plural with plural, and past tense with past tense.
- Clue convention: Notice abbreviations, question marks, quoted phrases, and words such as “perhaps” or “briefly.”
02 Common clue types
Know what the setter is asking.
Direct definition
The clue gives a straightforward meaning. “Not difficult” may lead to EASY.
Fill in the blank
The missing word completes a familiar phrase, quotation, title, or expression.
Abbreviation
A shortened clue—or words such as briefly, for short, or abbr.—often signals a shortened answer.
Wordplay
A question mark can signal a pun, playful definition, or answer that should not be read literally.
Proper name
A surname, title, city, character, athlete, or performer may supply the answer.
Crossword vocabulary
Compact words such as ERE, ETA, EON, and IRE appear often because their letters connect easily.
03 Crossing letters
Turn the grid into a pattern.
Write unknown squares as question marks. If a five-letter answer has E in the third position, enter ??E??. A confirmed first and fourth letter might become A??A?. Do not move known letters together—their positions are the most useful part of the pattern.
04 When nothing fits
Question the least certain letter.
A wrong crossing answer can make every candidate look impossible. Remove one uncertain letter at a time, verify the answer length, and check whether the clue requires a plural, abbreviation, or proper name. Keep the strongest letters and widen the search gradually.
05 Faster solving
Build momentum across the grid.
- Solve specific names, fill-in-the-blanks, and short direct definitions first.
- Use those answers to create crossing letters for harder clues.
- Revisit uncertain answers after another part of the grid is complete.
- Treat every answer as provisional until its crossings agree.
