FAQ Gin rummy rules

Common deadwood questions.

How are deadwood points counted?

Aces count one point, number cards count their face value, and tens, jacks, queens, and kings count ten points each.

What counts as a set in gin rummy?

A set is three or four cards of the same rank, such as three sevens.

What counts as a run?

A run is three or more consecutive cards in the same suit. Aces are low and do not follow kings.

Can one card belong to two melds?

No. When a card could fit in both a set and a run, the calculator compares the legal combinations and chooses the one with the lowest deadwood total.

When can I knock?

Under standard rules, you may knock with ten or fewer deadwood points. Zero deadwood is gin.
