Why two-letter words matter
Short words are board-control tools. They let you play beside existing words, reach premium squares, unload awkward tiles, and create multiple cross-words in one turn.
Learn them in small groups
Memorize a few at a time by function: vowel-heavy connectors, consonant-heavy escapes, and words that take a useful front or back hook. Repeated board use is more effective than staring at one enormous list.
Confirm the lexicon
Accepted short words vary by region, edition, tournament list, and app. Treat this page as a study shortlist and confirm unfamiliar entries in the official dictionary used for your game.
