Short does not mean low-scoring
Words With Friends gives several letters different values than Scrabble. A small word using J, Q, X, or Z can produce an efficient score while keeping the board under control.
Look for parallel value
A short play beside an existing word can create several valid cross-words at once. Count every new word and compare the defensive effect before settling on a placement.
Keep flexible tiles available
Do not spend a blank or S merely because it completes the first short word you notice. Those tiles often create more value when they unlock a future hook, lane, or full-rack play.
